Training Outcomes
“Participating in Clinician Emotional Resources Training had a noticeable impact on me personally. It helped me feel more connected—to both my colleagues and me—in a way that quieted a lot of the internal noise that often accompanies leadership and a busy clinical environment. The day-to-day pressures of the workplace, my own insecurities, and the constant pull toward problem-solving seemed to settle, allowing me to be more present, grounded, and intentional in my interactions with others.
I also observed meaningful changes within our counseling team. Clinician Emotional Resources Training appeared to strengthen their cohesion and deepen their sense of connection with one another. Counselors became increasingly willing to slow down, listen, and trust the therapeutic process rather than feeling compelled to immediately solve or fix what patients were experiencing.
Perhaps the most significant shift I observed was an increased appreciation for presence and witnessing as essential therapeutic interventions. Counselors began to recognize that effective therapy is not solely about providing answers or taking action. Equally valuable is the ability to remain fully present with a patient's experience—to witness their story with curiosity, compassion, and without judgment.”

“I agreed to participate in this experiment despite my doubts that we could deeply impact these folks. I did not think we would make a big difference with just four three-hour training spread over four months. These were notvall masters level clinicians. They would not be that interested in working on themselves. It would be hard to get buy-in. They would be resistant. It might be beyond the capacity of the lesser trained clinicians. I’ve never had so much fun being SO WRONG!
Other than a bit of initial resistance, none of my fears played out. Participants were uncomfortable, especially at first. But they were game to try something unfamiliar and were so powerfully impacted by their experiences that with each training, their personal and professional growth increased exponentially along with their excitement about what they were experiencing inside of themselves. Confidence, self-awareness, and compassion increased dramatically. As with any training, participants each took different things from the experience. But all agreed it was incredibly helpful, powerful, and exciting in all areas of their lives. It changed, quite positively, how they fundamentally showed up in the world.
I was also both surprised and elated by how the training impacted me. I was highly energized during and after each training session. I was actually still “high” from the final training a full week later. The clinicians had grown so much, were so dramatically impacted, and had such powerful experiences during and between the trainings, that it was a delight to facilitate this process. It did not matter whether they (or I) believed in the process. The human brain is wired to do what the human brain is wired to do. Change happens!”
— Zandra, Trainer“EERT had the power of working with the deepest parts of the nervous system. You just start responding differently. I started engaging more socially. My sleep improved. I became easier to be around. People go from strangers to their own inner workings to curious observers of the makings of their own mind and nervous system.
In my own shift toward safety, I could suddenly see how fear was operating in others, as if putting on glasses for the first time. It is uncanny, almost hard to believe I ever missed it. It has to be experienced, the way a photograph of the statue of David is not the same as standing in front of it. Now I understand the difference.
CERT works differently than most training. It moves something in you that is hard to name, but you know, unmistakably, that you are different afterward. We become more attuned, to each other and to ourselves. Energy that was once trapped in a recursive loop inside us is liberated and allowed to move.
I am one clinician. What changed in me, I now watch happen in colleagues I train and clients I sit with, again and again. This kind of change is not something a textbook or an online training can offer. It requires embodied experience, and that kind of training is expensive to build and often out of reach for the clinicians who need it most. This emotional resources training exists to make this deeper kind of knowing available to more of us.
CERT supports our growth and allows us to process the charges that build up in our system in the form of compassion fatigue, cynicism and grief. It is my belief, that without experiences like CERT, it is all too easy to slowly lose access to what makes us fully human and vital.”
— Joe, TrainerThe following is a patient’s description of her experience of radical emotional resources training in one specific psychotherapy session:
What made this session remarkable, was when I overcame the trigger of shame and unworthiness, I was able to connect with and integrate into my life unconditional love for my new baby. At the time of this session, I had just given birth to my first baby, so everything in my body, mind and spirit were primed toward protecting, caring for, keeping alive, and nurturing my newborn baby. You can imagine how surprising and perplexed I felt when the old feelings of shame and unworthiness had surfaced, causing me to feel so uncomfortable with my baby needing me and loving me! I felt profoundly unworthy of her love—the shame was acute. Even now while writing this, I can sense the feeling of shame in my body like a hand pressing hard against my chest, a stone dropping in my stomach, and hands tight around my neck restricting my voice. But something new and wonderful happened in this session, that shined a very bright light and helped me move out of sorrow to—unconditional love for my baby. Deep within my being, something very maternal overpowered that force of shame. My baby was much more important than the grip shame had on me and the stories it told me about myself. It didn’t matter if I felt unworthy; what mattered was being her mom and giving her everything she needed to flourish. The light of love was so bright, that the darkness of shame could not exist with it in the same moment, or at least was greatly minimized for the moment. When that pure, selfless love came into my being and I connected with it, my heart opened and shame released its hold. I was free to love my new baby, and free to allow my new baby to love me. Becoming a parent truly propelled my own personal healing, and I would often return to this unconditional love for my children in my recovery as time went on to redirect myself out of depression.

“The CERT program enriches and enlivens clinicians, from the inside out. Rather than focusing on building skills, CERT goes deeper by experientially guiding clinicians to access, activate and share their internal resources and energy. This, in turn, enhances the therapeutic relationship. I have experienced this as a clinician. Similarly, as an instructor, I have witnessed trainees repeatedly reflect surprise and excitement when they realize that, paradoxically, consciously activating their own internal resources has a positive impact on the person sitting across from them. They become aware that their mirror neurons change and recharge the therapy dyad without depleting their own energy. As a clinician, when I consciously, and precisely activate my own brain systems, while staying in relationship with the person across from me, I am more effective, connected and caring with less effort and more energy. This is an antidote to burnout. The CERT program trains clinicians to be with their “being”, thus enhancing therapy, regardless of modality. ”
